As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Ruiz has established himself as a distinguished figure in the world of dance, excelling as a choreographer, dancer, and professor. Throughout a career spanning nearly four decades, he has contributed to prestigious institutions including Ballet Hispánico of New York, where he has thrived as a dancer and choreographer since 1985. Since 2006, he has also held the titles of ballet teacher and choreographer with both the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Marymount Manhattan College; and, in 2016, Mr. Ruiz joined Hunter College as a choreographer and accepted a resident artist appointment with the Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program.

Mr. Ruiz's journey into dance began at an early age when he was discovered dancing at a festival by the National Ballet of Cuba. He persisted in formal ballet studies and received a diploma in Venezuela in 1984. His passion for dance led him to the United States where he auditioned for Ballet Hispánico in 1985, marking the beginning of Mr. Ruiz's illustrious career in New York, across the United States, and internationally.

Distinctive leadership in exciting creative projects further defines Mr. Ruiz's presence in the industry, including choreography for "La Estancia" in collaboration with the New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra; and a directorship role for the debut of the Cuban dance company, Contemporáneo de Camagüey, at The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College in 2019. Mr. Ruiz, in 2023, also choreographed "Pas de O'Farrill," commissioned by Lincoln Center, which was a collaboration between New York City Ballet and Ballet Hispánico.

Numerous accolades have marked certain milestones of Mr. Ruiz's career, thus far. He was honored with The Bessie Award, a Choo-San Goh Award, a Cuban Artists Fund Award and The Joyce Award. Moreover, Mr. Ruiz was humbled to earn recognition for public service from the FBI during Hispanic Heritage Month in 2012.

Mr. Ruiz is proud to have had his work featured at prestigious venues like Lincoln Center. Notably, he was the first Cuban-American allowed to choreograph in Cuba in 2011 -- a milestone that led to performances of his pieces in the United States. He also founded The Windows Project, fostering cultural links between the United States and Cuba through dance; and Mr. Ruiz's work has been featured in two PBS documentaries that aired nationally and internationally.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Mr. Ruiz enjoys entertaining friends at his homes in Manhattan and in Bellport, Long Island, traveling to new destinations and attending theater performances. Looking toward the future, he aims to further secure his presence in the dance community by inspiring and mentoring new artists and dancers. Additionally, through his persistent dedication to dance education and performance, Mr. Ruiz will continually promote the values of cultural exchange and understanding to build a legacy that will influence future generations of performance artists.
